Inlays and Onlays

In some cases, Dr Amin may determine a cavity is too large to repair with a simple filling but also not large enough to justify fitting a full dental crown.

In these cases, he may suggest restoring your tooth using a restoration called an inlay or onlay.

What are inlays and onlays?

An inlay is a pre-made dental restoration that can be used to fill a large cavity in between the cusps of the tooth. An onlay is essentially the same shape but larger, extending over one or both cusps to provide additional support and restore the full chewing surface.

Our dental laboratory customises inlays and onlays based on the size and shape needed. Every effort is made to closely match the colour of your existing tooth for a seamless appearance.

How are inlays and onlays fitted?

The process of fitting an inlay or an onlay usually requires two treatment visits of less than an hour each.
During your initial consultation, Dr Amin examines the cavity to determine whether your tooth needs an inlay or an onlay.

The first stage involves numbing the area in and around the tooth using a local anaesthetic. The dentist will then remove the decayed portion in the cavity. Next, Dr Amin will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a dental laboratory, where a technician will prepare your customised inlay or onlay.

You may receive a temporary filling while you wait for your inlay or onlay. During your second visit, Dr Amin will permanently bond the custom inlay or onlay to your tooth.

How long do inlays and onlays last?

With the right care, an inlay or onlay can last for 20 years or more as long as you brush and floss your teeth regularly and see your dentist twice a year.
